Kareem George here, with another quick post for our time-starved travel inspiration seekers. Below are my 3 biggest surprises from São Paolo:
1. Size - I knew this was a big city, however, it is a REALLY big city: 12 million in the city center, 20 million in the greater metropolitan area, 500+ square miles (!). It is the largest city in South America and the largest Portuguese-speaking city in the world. In fact, more people live here than in all of Portugal!
2. Diversity - immigrants from all over the globe have settled in São Paulo and in huge numbers: largest Japanese community outside of Japan, second largest Italian community outside of Italy (after New York City), third largest German community outside of Germany
3. Architecture & Art - there are many architecturally significant structures in São Paulo and variety of style ranging from neo gothic to colonial to the Brazilian modernist Niemeyer. And then there is the incredible street art
