Celebrating Kwanzaa

Happy Kwanzaa

December 26th, 2023 - January 1st, 2024

As we enjoy the festive season, we embark on a journey of celebration and connection. This time, we dive into the rich tapestry of Kwanzaa, a cultural extravaganza that beautifully weaves together the spirit of community, heritage, and unity.

During Kwanzaa, celebrants exchange gifts, honor each other, and light one black, three red and three green candles in a candle holder called a Kinara. The candles represent "Nguzo Saba"- seven important principles for honoring the African American heritage. Black stands for the Black people, red for the bloodshed and green for the land.

Kwanzaa, a Swahili term that means "first fruits," is a week-long celebration honoring African heritage and culture. It was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, emphasizing the importance of family, community, and self-improvement. The seven principles, known as the Nguzo Saba, guide us through each day of the celebration, fostering a deeper connection with our roots.

Dr. Karenga, a professor and Chair of the Africana Studies Department at California State University-Long Beach, is the holder of two Ph.D's. He completed his degrees in political science at the United States International University, and in social ethics at the University of Southern California.

Habari gani asks the question, "What's the News?" in Swahili. This simple yet powerful greeting invites us to reflect on the seven principles of Kwanzaa. When someone greets you with "Habari Gani?" during Kwanzaa, you respond with the principle of the day. The principles are:

  1. Umoja (Unity) - Answer "Umoja" (oo-MOH-jah)

  2. Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) - Answer Kujichagulia (koo-jee-cha-goo-LEE-yah)

  3. Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) - Answer "Ujima" (oo-JEE-mah)

  4. Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) - Answer "Ujamaa" (oo-JAH-mah)

  5. Nia (Purpose) - Answer "Nia" (NEE-yah)

  6. Kuumba (Creativity) - Answer "Kuumba" (koo-OOM-bah)

  7. Imani (Faith) - Answer "Imani" (ee-MAH-nee)

Symbolic Simmer:
Much like the Karamu Feast itself, the stew (click here for the recipe) symbolizes unity and collective effort. As it simmers, it reflects the principles of Kwanzaa, creating a delicious metaphor for the interconnectedness of our heritage.

Karamu at Home:
Consider adding this symbolic dish to your Karamu Feast. Let its aroma fill your home, bringing loved ones together to share stories, reflect on the principles of Kwanzaa, and savor the flavors that connect us to the rich tapestry of African culture.

In the joyous spirit of Karamu, let this feast be a harmonious celebration of resilience, unity, and creativity.

In the spirit of Kwanzaa, we invite you to embark on a literary journey that beautifully captures the essence of the Nguzo Saba principles. "Seven Spools of Thread" by Angela Shelf Medearis is a captivating tale that weaves together the traditions of Kwanzaa with a rich narrative.

Set in a small African village, the story unfolds as seven siblings struggle to get along. Upon their father's passing, he leaves them with a unique challenge: turn seven spools of thread into gold or face being cut off from their inheritance. As they confront their differences and learn to collaborate, the siblings discover the true meaning of unity, collective work, and purpose.

This heartwarming narrative aligns seamlessly with the principles of Kwanzaa, making it a perfect companion for the holiday season. Whether you're reading it alone or with loved ones, "Seven Spools of Thread" reminds us that, like the threads in the story, our lives are intricately connected, and through shared values, we can create a tapestry of strength and resilience.

Add this enchanting tale to your Kwanzaa reading list and allow its vibrant storytelling to inspire conversations about family, unity, and the enduring principles that make this season truly special.
