Fortune was kind, affording us a sunny November weekend to explore this very engaging city. Apparently it had been raining consistently for more than a week prior! A downpour would have certainly soured a leisurely stroll by the Willamette River as well as a casual visit to the Saturday (and Sunday) market.
The market wares available for purchase were quite diverse: hand made art of various media, jewelry, hand-woven scarves, soaps and candles. Several of the sculptures and water colors were particularly interesting. The artists were often present and in many cases there creating new art.
Portland is a walking city with vibrant neighborhoods filled with unique shops and restaurants. There are several self-guided walking tour possibilities and the market is a great starting point. The Saturday Market is in the Old China Town district, which was Portland's original downtown. Close by foot is the Pearl District, known for its hip character, stylish shops and the famous Powell's Books.
