Durban and its charming Oyster Box

It was a pleasure to return to Durban for a relaxed and luxurious overnight at the beautiful Oyster Box. This lovely hotel, part of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, is welcoming, warm and full of character. Following more than 16 hours in the air, it was a delight to be welcome by name before I wearily made it up to the front desk.

Arrival

Check-in was efficient and friendly – moreover, I received an upgrade. I was assisted to my room with the same graciousness. I could already hear the waves crashing as I walked into my new home for the next 20 hours. The sound drew me to the window to take in my nighttime view of the old lighthouse and the navy blue velvet night sky. Already, I was looking forward to the inspiring view I would have by daylight.

Atmosphere

Keen to maximize my time and experience, I soon headed to the Oyster Bar (responsibly, I did unpack and freshen up a bit first). Classic and charming, I enjoyed the contemporary, off-white, beachy décor, especially the huge leaf fans over the bar. A crisp glass of Chenin Blanc was relaxing and the fresh sushi I was served quickly disappeared. I perhaps overdid my ‘quick drink and light eat,’ but still headed to the terrace for dinner afterwards.

Respite

I did not last long, though I truly wanted to savor the casual lovely environment, sea air and moonlight. A caprese salad was the perfect light meal before I ambled to my room. The King bed was most inviting and the light color scheme soothing. I made preparations for retirement in the spacious, modern bathroom. Before falling asleep I opened my shutters in order to rise to the morning light.

Day of Leisure

The morning light and views gently welcomed a sunny day. Breakfast was bountiful, though I ate conservatively to make room for a mushroom burger and fries at lunch (previously spotted when I investigated the lunch menu the night before). This comfort meal was the perfect conclusion to an indulgent half day. Following breakfast I was pampered in the lovely Oyster Box spa. It was now time to begin the long journey homeward…

Farewell

Thank you to the Oyster Box for a most pleasurable visit. I look forward to a future return and Durban is the fortunate home to such an exceptional hotel.
