Nishiki Market

We know many are intrigued by Japanese food and geisha culture, so without further ado…

First we visit Nishiki Market, a thriving market that came into being in the early 17th Century. Extending about 400 meters east to west, the market is lined with shops selling mainly fish, Kyoto vegetables, bean curd products, dried goods, pickles, ready-prepared side dishes, indeed any kind of food that might be required for Kyoryori traditional cuisine.

We end the day with a leisurely amble through the quaint alleyways of Gion, a famed geisha district lined with bars, restaurants and teahouses sporting old-style wooden facades. One may catch sight of a geisha or a maiko as she flits between her lessons and evening appointments. And we do! … but are not able to get the camera out in time before she vanished down the street…
