Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Kyoto, Japan

Late in the afternoon, we wander amid the soaring stalks of bamboo and experience the sense of otherworldliness that makes Arashiyama so enchanting. If there is a breeze, one may listen for the inimitable creak as the bamboo sways in the grove, now listed among Japan's 100 soundscapes.

Next we proceed to Togetsu Bridge, Arashiyama's most iconic landmark and the perfect point from which to relish the ever-changing colors of the mountain scenery. As springtime approaches, the cherry trees that line the Oi River will soon become a riot of pink blossom.
