We are always excited to learn about the unique elements of a destination firsthand. Travel is an incredible teacher and today we discover two of Puebla’s most important gems: Talavera pottery and the Cholula architectural site.
Spanish settlers brought the craft of Talavera to Mexico in the 15th century. Puebla became a center of this art, and one of the most high-quality producers in region, Talavera de la Reyna, was founded in 1990 by Angelica Moreno. Her aim was to preserve, rescue, innovate and enhance this tradition in Mexico. Our visit to the workshop was fascinating as we were taken through each of the phases of production: treatment of the clay, molding, sealing, design, decoration and firing. The workshop setting itself is beautiful and the variety of pieces available is impressive. We did not leave empty handed 🙂
Did you know that the largest man-made pyramid in the world is located in San Andrés Cholula, Puebla, Mexico? We did not, and were amazed to see the expansive site of this Aztec temple, which still remains largely buried. A Spanish church, La Iglesia de Los Remedios, now sits on its summit. The original pyramid was built more than 2000 years ago and reveals a very large and complex society. We focused above ground, however there is also an expansive network of tunnels that may be explored.
Thanks again to our wonderful guide, Alberto, for introducing us to several of the most important aspects of Puebla. There is still so much more to see and we definitely look forward to a return visit.
